One of England’s tallest maypoles — a striped pole about 65 feet high — stands at the centre of Welford, where a maypole has been recorded since Shakespeare’s day. Thatched black-and-white cottages fill a loop of the River Avon west of Stratford. The Bell Inn is the village’s old coaching pub. Stratford-upon-Avon station is about 6km north-east.
