Lawrence Johnston, an American-born soldier with no formal training, spent forty years from 1907 turning a Cotswold farm into one of Britain’s great Arts and Crafts gardens — a run of hedged ‘garden rooms’, each with its own planting and mood, that went on to shape Sissinghurst and much of 20th-century design. He gave it to the National Trust in 1948, its first garden-only property. Paid entry near Chipping Campden; Honeybourne station is about 6km west.
