A 400-year-old inn of golden Cotswold stone on the green at Ilmington, under the escarpment at the county’s southern edge. Inside are flagstone floors and a fire that seems to burn most of the year, with eight bedrooms for those making a weekend of it. It’s a long-standing base for walkers on the Cotswold edge, and the National Trust garden at Hidcote is just along the lane.
