A small Georgian town at the northern gateway to the Cotswolds, once a busy market for wool and sheep — the name comes from an Old English “sheep-wash town”. The wide streets and old coaching inns are a legacy of the droving trade. There’s a good run of independent shops now, and Sheldon’s Wine Cellars is based here. Moreton-in-Marsh, about 9km south-west, is the nearest station.
