Alcester began as the Roman town of Alauna, a walled settlement where several Roman roads met. That plan still shows in the timber-framed High Street and in narrow Malt Mill Lane, which slips off towards the church much as it did centuries ago. Coughton Court and Ragley Hall sit just outside town. Wilmcote station is about 8km east.
