At 454m (1,489ft), Kirkstone is the highest road pass in the Lakes open to ordinary traffic. The A592 climbs to it from Ullswater and Patterdale on one side; the pull up from Ambleside is so steep it’s long been known as The Struggle. At the top stands the Kirkstone Pass Inn, the third-highest pub in England after the Tan Hill and the Cat and Fiddle — a welcome sight in poor weather, which the pass gets plenty of.
