Rydal Falls sits in the grounds of Rydal Hall, between Ambleside and Grasmere. Below the hall stands ‘The Grot’, a small 17th-century summer house built to frame the lower fall through its window — an early piece of Lakeland tourism that drew Picturesque-era painters and writers to the spot. It’s a short, easy walk from the gardens, which are open to visitors, with a café on hand. Windermere station is about 7km to the south-east.
