Ambleside is a slate-built town at the head of Windermere, its streets packed with outdoor shops, cafes and walkers stocking up. The one building everyone photographs is Bridge House, a tiny cottage perched on a stone arch over Stock Ghyll — built more than 300 years ago, at one point home to a family of eight, and now looked after by the National Trust. Windermere station is about 7km to the south-east.
