A Roman fort once stood here — today it survives as earthworks in Cumbria. The Albion Guide maps 23 Roman forts in the county; this is one of them. The surrounding countryside is part of the Lake District National Park. For arrivals by rail, Windermere Station is 6.4 km to the south-east.
