Rydal Mount was William Wordsworth’s home for the last 37 years of his life, from 1813 until he died in 1850, and it’s still owned by his descendants. Inside are family portraits and belongings; outside is the sloping fell garden he laid out himself, much as he left it. Paid admission. It sits just above Rydal church and Dora’s Field, while Dove Cottage, his earlier and humbler home, is a short way towards Grasmere.
