Approximate location — this spot is pinned to the nearest village, so the exact point may be a little way off.

Barely bigger than a garden shed, Bridge House is a two-room 17th-century cottage built right across Stock Beck in the middle of Ambleside. The tale goes it was put up over the water to dodge land tax, and over the years it has served as a home, a shop and even a family’s dwelling. The National Trust looks after it now and it’s free to peek inside, though there’s not much room to swing a cat.
