William Wordsworth helped choose the site for St Mary’s at Rydal, built in 1824 on what had been an orchard. Beside it lies Dora’s Field, where the poet planted daffodils in memory of his daughter Dora — best seen in spring. He worshipped here while living up the hill at Rydal Mount. Open and free; Windermere station is about 9km away.
