Barely more than a lane of houses between Grasmere and Ambleside, Rydal is where Wordsworth lived out his last decades, at Rydal Mount from 1813 to 1850. Below the house is Dora’s Field, where he planted daffodils after his daughter’s death — now cared for by the National Trust and gold with them each spring. Paths from the hamlet climb to Rydal Cave and run along the shore of Rydal Water.
