Up a steep lane off Ambleside’s centre, the Golden Rule is the town’s classic unspoilt local - a Robinsons pub with well-kept cask ale, a coal fire and no food beyond the odd pie. Walkers and residents prop up the same bar. It’s Grade II listed and refreshingly plain. Windermere is the nearest station, a bus ride south.
