For a drink right on the water, the Wateredge Inn at Waterhead has a garden running down to the head of Windermere and the steamer pier at Ambleside. Grab a bench, watch the launches come and go, and settle in. It does food and keeps rooms with lake views. The cruise boats call at the pier alongside; the town’s station is a couple of miles up the hill.
