Rydal Hall
Open accessfree to visit at any reasonable time
The formal gardens at Rydal Hall were laid out in 1909 by the landscape architect Thomas Mawson, terraces and a rock garden dropping down toward Rydal Water. Look out for the Grot, a small stone summerhouse built in the 1660s with a window framed directly onto Rydal Falls — a viewpoint that’s been drawing visitors since the 18th century. The grounds are free to enter every day, donations welcome, though the hall itself is a Christian retreat centre rather than a museum. Rydal Mount, Wordsworth’s old home, is a short walk uphill.
