St Mary’s in Ambleside keeps a surprise on its west wall: a 26-foot mural of the town’s rushbearing procession, painted by Gordon Ransom during the war, when the Royal College of Art was evacuated here. The church is a tall-spired Gothic Revival design by George Gilbert Scott from the 1850s, and the spire is a landmark for miles around. Open and free, in the middle of town.
