Small, low and hugely popular, Loughrigg Fell is the walk half of Ambleside and Grasmere seem to do on a fine afternoon. It only reaches 335m, but the top is a maze of little knolls, tarns and criss-crossing paths, with wide views over Grasmere, Rydal Water and Windermere. Families climb it, dog-walkers climb it, and it makes an easy first fell in the Lake District. The old slate chamber of Rydal Cave and the lakeside path along Loughrigg Terrace sit on the lower slopes, so it’s simple to string together a gentle loop.
