Half shop, half cottage, the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop bakes to a secret recipe that Sarah Nelson came up with here in 1854 — a chewy cross between a biscuit and a cake that’s neither, quite. It’s sold, often still warm, from Church Cottage right beside St Oswald’s churchyard in Grasmere, where the Wordsworths are buried. The shop is tiny and there’s usually a queue, but it moves quickly, and they’ll post it home for you.
