Allan Bank is a relaxed National Trust house on the hillside above Grasmere, run differently from most: comfy chairs, open fires and lake views to sit with rather than ropes and glass cases. William Wordsworth lived here early on, and later it was home to Canon Rawnsley, one of the founders of the National Trust. Bring a book and settle in for an afternoon. Admission applies, and opening is seasonal, so check before you set off.
