At 1,489 feet near the top of the Kirkstone Pass, this is the highest pub in the Lake District and, by its own reckoning, the second highest in England. Established in 1496, the Kirkstone Pass Inn is a lone slate building on the wild road between Ambleside and Ullswater. Expect log fires, hearty food and big views - and check opening hours before setting off, as they vary with the season and the weather.
