Tutbury climbs a hill above the River Dove to the ruins of its castle, where Mary, Queen of Scots was held prisoner more than once — she found the place cold and cheerless. At the foot of the town stands St Mary’s, a Norman priory church with a richly carved west front. Tutbury has been a glassmaking town since the fifteenth century. Tutbury & Hatton station is about 2km to the north-east.
