St Mary's Priory Church, Tutbury
What survives at Tutbury is the nave of a Benedictine priory founded in the 1080s, but the reason to come is the west front of about 1160. Its great doorway runs to seven carved orders of chevron, foliage and beakhead, and the outermost is cut from alabaster — the earliest known use of the stone in England. It counts among the best Norman work in the country. Open to visitors, with Tutbury & Hatton station just a few minutes’ walk to the north-east.
