Under the chancel at Repton is a small stone crypt built in the 8th century, when this was a royal centre of Mercia. Mercian kings were buried here — Aethelbald in 757, Wiglaf around 840 — and the boy Wystan, murdered in 849, whose shrine drew pilgrims until his relics were moved to Evesham. The spiral-carved columns and low vaulting survive almost intact, among the finest scraps of Anglo-Saxon building in the country. The church above sits in the village; Willington station is about 2km away.
