Come in October for the colour. Bluebell Arboretum, near Smisby on the Derbyshire–Leicestershire border, is a young woodland garden planted for its trees — maples, birches, sweet gums and magnolias that turn hard in autumn. Robert and Suzette Vernon started it in 1992 on six acres, marking the day by planting two giant redwoods, and later doubled the ground. It doubles as a specialist tree nursery, so you can buy what you’ve just been admiring. Admission is charged.
