The Earl of Moira built this blast furnace beside the Ashby Canal in 1804, to smelt the iron ore and coal of the surrounding Ashby Woulds. It never worked well and was in blast only briefly, from 1806, which is partly why the tall brick furnace survives so complete. It’s now a museum of ironmaking and canal life within the National Forest, with lime kilns and craft workshops alongside, and Conkers is a short walk off.
