Ruined castle with a great split tower.
Sir Walter Scott set scenes of Ivanhoe at Ashby, and Regency readers flocked to the ruined castle once the novel made it famous. William, Lord Hastings began building it in the 1470s, raising the tall Hastings Tower that still stands, now cared for by English Heritage. The market town around it lies within the National Forest.
