Repton was a capital of Anglo-Saxon Mercia, and its parish church keeps the extraordinary evidence: a small 8th-century crypt, once a mausoleum for Mercian kings, tucked beneath St Wystan’s. The village is also known for Repton School, founded in 1557 on the site of the old priory. Willington station is a couple of kilometres north-west across the Trent.
