This is the Melbourne that lent its name to the Australian city: the New South Wales governor, Richard Bourke, named it in 1837 for the prime minister of the day, the 2nd Viscount Melbourne, who took his own title from the family seat here at Melbourne Hall. The Derbyshire original is a Georgian market town down in the county’s southern lowlands, with the hall’s formal gardens and a big, richly carved Norman parish church.
