Elvaston Castle is a Gothic-revival house remodelled for the Earls of Harrington in the early nineteenth century, its grounds laid out by the gardener William Barron from 1830. Barron packed the estate with topiary, rockwork, avenues and a lake, moving mature trees great distances to do it. Derby Corporation bought the estate in 1969 and opened it in 1970 as one of England’s first country parks, and its 320-odd acres are free to walk. Spondon station is under 3km to the north-west.
