It was a Much Wenlock doctor, William Penny Brookes, who founded the Wenlock Olympian Games in 1850 — a mix of athletics and country sports still held each summer, and a direct inspiration for the modern Olympics; the 2012 mascot Wenlock was named for the town. The little market town also has the ruins of a Cluniac priory and a run of old timbered buildings. Wenlock Edge runs south-west from here along its long limestone scarp.
