World's first major cast-iron bridge, UNESCO site.
Open accessfree to visit at any reasonable time
Cast at Coalbrookdale and raised over the Severn in 1779, this was the first major bridge in the world built of iron — a single 30-metre span of curved ribs erected by Abraham Darby III, from a design begun by the architect Thomas Farnolls Pritchard. It gave its name to the village of Ironbridge that grew at its foot, and now anchors a World Heritage gorge. Free to walk across (English Heritage); Telford Central station is about 7km to the north-east.
