Down at the water’s edge in Jackfield, the Boat Inn keeps a running tally of the River Severn’s floods: dates and heights marked on the door and wall, some of them startlingly high up. It’s an old-fashioned riverside local, close enough to the water to be shut for a scrub-out most winters. The Jackfield Tile Museum is a short walk along the gorge, and Telford Central station is about 7km north.
