Two-tier town joined by a cliff railway.
England’s oldest and steepest inland funicular still hauls passengers up the sandstone cliff at Bridgnorth, climbing since 1892 between the riverside Low Town and the older High Town on the ridge above. Up top stand the leaning remains of a Norman keep, left at a drunken tilt after Civil War besiegers undermined it in 1646. The Dudmaston estate lies a few miles down the Severn.
