Stump Cross Caverns sits high on Greenhow Hill, on the moorland road between Pateley Bridge and Grassington. Lead miners William and Mark Newbould broke into it in 1860 while prospecting, uncovering flowstone and stalactites tens of thousands of years old, along with the bones of Ice Age animals including wolverine and reindeer. It’s a self-guided show cave with an admission charge and a cafe on top. Wrap up warm — it stays cold underground, and the site sits well over 1,000 feet up on exposed moor.
