Despite the grim name, the Valley of Desolation is a pleasant wooded side-valley on the Bolton Abbey estate, with a slender waterfall part-way up. It lies on the walking route from the abbey up to Simon’s Seat on Barden Moor, so plenty of walkers pass the fall on a longer day out. Access is through the estate — the paths are good and well-marked, but the car parks charge. Ilkley station is about 10km to the south-east.
