These are the only large gardens open to the public inside the Yorkshire Dales National Park, laid out from 1927 by Sir William Milner around an old hall high above the Wharfe near Appletreewick. Twenty-odd acres of formal terraces, herbaceous borders and woodland climb the hillside, with fine views out across the dale. The hall itself is a religious retreat and stays closed, but the gardens open from April to October for a charge. The rocky ravine of Trollers Gill is close by if you want to make a walk of it.
