Pontypool Park was the grounds of the Hanbury family’s estate, given over to public use and known locally as the People’s Park. Paths climb from the town through parkland and woods to the Folly Tower and, higher still, a restored Shell Grotto lined with shells and bones. The old stables now hold a leisure centre, there’s a dry ski slope on the slope above, and an Italian garden near the entrance. Free and open.
