Blaenavon’s industrial landscape became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, one of the most complete surviving pictures of how iron and coal drove the Industrial Revolution. Big Pit, a working colliery until 1980, now takes visitors underground for free, and the ruined Blaenavon Ironworks stand a short way off. Abergavenny, about 7km northeast, is the nearest railway station.
