Twenty-one locks climb the hillside here in a single flight, lifting the Grand Union Canal about 146 feet — the reason boaters call it the ‘Stairway to Heaven’. The present wide locks, taking two narrowboats side by side, opened in 1934. You can walk the towpath up the flight from the canalside café near Hatton, with Hatton (Warks) station about 2km west.
