Substantial ruinsruined, but plenty survives above ground
In 1575 Robert Dudley laid out an elaborate pleasure garden at Kenilworth to court Elizabeth I during her stay. English Heritage recreated it in 2009, working from a rare eyewitness letter by Robert Langham, so you can now walk the same knots, arbours and marble fountain within the red sandstone castle ruins. Worth pairing with the castle itself. Kenilworth station is about 1.7km east.
