One of the oldest allotment sites in the country still in use, Stoney Road’s 123 plots were laid out in the mid-1800s as detached “town gardens” for Coventry’s better-off tradesmen, each with its own ornamental summer house — a handful of which have since been restored. It’s a working site today, tended by individual plot-holders, so it isn’t generally open to wander round. The exception is Heritage Open Days each September, when volunteers run a guided walk explaining the history and the restoration work. The Coventry Canal runs close by.
