Sir Roger Newdigate spent decades remodelling this medieval and Elizabethan house into flamboyant Gothic Revival, with fan-vaulted ceilings borrowed from Westminster Abbey. George Eliot grew up on the estate, where her father worked as land agent, and used the hall as the model for Cheverel Manor in one of her early stories. Arbury normally opens on bank holiday weekends between Easter and August, hall and gardens both — though it’s currently closed for restoration, with reopening planned for Easter 2027.
