A grand collegiate church when Sir Thomas Astley rebuilt it in 1343, St Mary’s has shrunk to about a fifth of its former size since the college was dissolved. What survives is worth the detour: carved choir stalls with painted panels of the prophets and apostles, and the tombs of the Grey family, forebears of Lady Jane Grey, who held the manor of Astley. Bermuda Park station is roughly 5km to the east.
