Packington Hall has been the seat of the Earls of Aylesford since the 18th century, when the 3rd Earl rebuilt the house with architect Matthew Brettingham and brought in Capability Brown to landscape the park, damming old mill ponds into the long serpentine Hall Pool. Inside, look out for the Pompeian Room, designed by Joseph Bonomi to house an Etruscan vase collection. It’s still the family home, near Meriden, so there’s no walking in off the road: visits are pre-booked guided tours of the ground floor and gardens, run through Historic Houses or Warwickshire Gardens Trust open days.
