Castle Bromwich Hall’s grounds have kept the shape of a formal garden laid out around 1700, one of the most complete of its date left in England, with a 100-metre holly walk said to mirror one at Hampton Court. The hall itself passed into private hands and isn’t open, but the Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens Trust rescued the garden from decades of neglect and now opens it Wednesday to Sunday, with an admission charge. Sutton Park is a short drive north-west for something wilder.
