Birmingham Botanical Gardens opened in 1832 to a design by John Claudius Loudon, and the general layout he drew up still holds, arranged around four Victorian glasshouses — tropical, subtropical, Mediterranean and fern. It’s run as an independent charity in leafy Edgbaston, a short walk from the Worcester & Birmingham Canal. Open daily with an admission charge; Five Ways station is about 1.3km north-east.
