Cannon Hill Park was a gift to Birmingham from the philanthropist Louisa Ryland, who handed over 57 acres in 1873 and paid to drain and lay it out as a public park — it opened without ceremony that September. The landscape architect was T. J. Gibson, who also designed Battersea Park, and his lakes and ornamental ponds are still the heart of the place. Now around 250 acres, it holds the Midlands Arts Centre and plenty of room for a walk, free to enter at any time. The Worcester & Birmingham Canal passes a couple of kilometres to the north-west.
