Key Hill Cemetery opened in 1836 as Birmingham’s first nonconformist burial ground, tucked into the Jewellery Quarter above old sand-mining tunnels. Industrialists, inventors and reformers who couldn’t or wouldn’t be buried in an Anglican churchyard ended up here, among them the Liberal statesman Joseph Chamberlain. It’s no longer used for burials, but Birmingham City Council keeps the gates open daily through the day, so you can wander the ivy-grown paths and Victorian monuments for free. Jewellery Quarter station is about 0.2km south.
