A grey stone house sits inside its moat at Baddesley Clinton, little changed since the 1630s and reached across a bridge into a gatehouse. In 1591 several hunted priests hid here for hours in holes built by Nicholas Owen, the Jesuit lay-brother who made concealed refuges across Catholic England. Beyond the moat there are gardens, a lake walk and an orchard. National Trust, deep in the old Forest of Arden countryside.
